To the layperson, fuel injectors are far from sexy, or likely even interesting for that matter. To those in the automotive industry, however, fuel injectors are as glamorous as a car part gets. With that said, not everyone is a genius and automatically knows everything there is to know about the fuel injector. For such reason, here are five things everyone in the auto industry should know about fuel injectors.

  1. What Is It? A fuel injector is a valve that is controlled electronically while being operated by pressure coming from fuel that is being pumped by the fuel pump. More specifically, the fuel injector essentially takes the liquid gasoline that is being supplied by the fuel pump and subsequently turns it into a mist that is then sprayed. In other words, the fuel injector transforms and then transfers the liquid gas in a spray form that the engine can run off and burn effectively.
  2. What Is Its Purpose? The primary purpose, or function, of a fuel injector, is to transfer an altered form of liquid fuel to the engine so that it can use it as gas and run properly. This is a much more complicated process than the previous sentence alludes, but to be more concise, the fuel injector, in essence, has the job of supplying the fuel to the engine through its electronically powered valve.
  3. Where Is It Located? The fuel injector is located on the intake manifold; it is strategically mounted there so it can adequately inject fuel into the intake valves ultimately leading to the engine. On the reverse end is a fuel supply rail, which bridges the gap between the fuel injector and the fuel being pumped in from the fuel tank.
  4. How To Tell If It Is Faulty? There are a number of ways to tell if a fuel injector is malfunctioning. Perhaps most notable is when the engine is not getting an adequate amount of fuel, or conversely too little fuel to operate correctly. This usually leads to a loss of power in the engine, or at the very least a display of the ‘check engine light.’ While this infamous light can mean a number of things have gone wrong, the fuel injector is definitely a possibility.
  5. What Causes It To Malfunction? Not maintaining a clean fuel filter can damage the fuel injector as it becomes clogged with dirt particles. For this reason, it is crucial that the fuel filter is properly maintained and checked regularly. In addition, using low-grade gasoline can also adversely damage the fuel injector over time. This happens as deposits from the low-quality fuel interrupt the fuel injector’s trajectory as it sprays the fuel.
