When removing the fuel pump lock ring on top of the fuel tank, you may be tempted to use a hammer and a metal punch or screwdriver. This could cause sparks that could ignite fumes. Instead, use a hard plastic punch with a rubber hammer to loosen the fuel pump ring on top of the tank. This is not only safer but doesn’t damage the tangs on the lock ring. When you reinstall the lock ring, use the same tools to tighten the ring.
